Yes, you can appeal your dependency status to the school’s financial aid office. However, most cases are approved only in the case of a breakdown between you and your parents. If you are still in contact with them, have a good relationship with them, then odds are your appeal will be denied. And, there is no additional appeal process…the school’s decision is final. However, it never hurts to try as they just might approve it.
You didn’t say if you applied for financial aid (including student loans) by completing the application at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Even if you are required to apply as a depending student you still should be eligible for student loans which could cover most if not all of the $5,000 you are looking for. Make sure you look into this option.
